And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man - Luke 2:52
Growing in Wisdom
Growing in wisdom is referred to today as cognitive development. It is not our desire
to test, compare or pressure children into learning. Instead we try to guide children
to a level of learning in line with their development. The Porter Preschool and
Kindergarten programs us the ABeka curriculum, which is a Christian based curriculum
used throughout the country. Areas of study include: counting, comprehension, phonics,
time/day/week, colors, etc. Children are encouraged and challenged with daily learning
activities. Art is used in the classroom as a means of encouraging their creativity.
Growing in Stature
Just as Jesus grew stronger and developed motor skills, we also want children to
develop in these areas. We have a daily gym time in which children participate in
free play as well as structured play. Proper physical development is essential for
preschoolers. They run, throw and jump to develop gross motor skills. Competition
games are used sparingly with a main emphasis placed on cooperation games. The main
objective to this time is FUN! We want the children to enjoy themselves so much
that they have no idea they are learning.
Growing in Favor with God
Children learn basic biblical truths such as:
- God loves me
- God made me
- God made the world
- God loves everyone
- Jesus loves me
- Jesus is a friend
- Jesus' birth
- Church is a good place
- The Bible tells me about God
- I should obey my parents
- God wants me to share
- Jesus is now living in heaven
- The Bible is a special book
A Bible story is part of each day's activities. Before snacks, children pray,
thanking God for their food. Children also learn "Bible Songs." All classes
attend music. The 3 year old classes incorporate music in the classroom.
Growing in Favor with Others
Socialization skills are essential in the development of every child. This vital
aspect is developed and encourage at Porter Preschool and Kindergarten. Sharing
skills are nurtured and friendships are developed. Children are encouraged to practice
the "Golden Rule" in treating others as they would like to be treated.
Children will also learn about their community, including what policemen do, what
firemen do and to recognize traffic signs. Field trips are taken throughout the
year, allowing children to experience and explore their world. The Porter Memorial
Baptist Preschool and Kindergarten programs desire that learning experiences translate
into actions. For that is truly when a teacher knows a student has learned.
