Senior Adult Ministries and Goals

2009 - 2010

The Senior Adult Ministry has great potential within our community.  The national statistics help to put this into perspective:

  • 34% of all Americans is 50 years of age or older.  Every seven seconds another person turns 50!

  • People age-65 plus, number over 35 million representing one out of every 8 Americans.

  • The number of older Americans (65+) has increased to 12.4% since 1990 (3.3) million people celebrated their 65th birthday last year. . . almost 5,500 per day.

  • As of July 1983, there are more adults age 65 or olde4r than teenagers in the United States.

  • This growing number of senior adults are living longer that ever before.  More than two hundred Americans reach age 100 every week.

In his article, "starting a Senior Adult Ministry"  David Satterfield said:  A survey of senior adults pinpointed the following basic needs, ranked by the respondents according to their importance.

  • To be loved and appreciated

  • To do a useful, and significant work

  • To be accepted and respected as a group

  • To gain information about money, finance, and wills

  • To secure health information

  • To meet transportation needs

  • To have counselors to talk with them

  • To have recreational activities

The Local Statistics help to reinforce Porter's focus on Senior Adults.  The U.S. Census report for Jessamine, and Fayette Counties, indicates that in these two counties there are:

  • Ages 55 - 64         22,592 people

  • Ages 65 & up        55,292 people

          Total                    77,884
